| Headline: | Giving Children with Disabilities a brighter tomorrow |
| What We Do: | Children Today was founded in 1994 to help disabled children and young people up to the age of 25 enjoy a better quality of life by providing them with the specialised equipment they need.
Often children and young people with disabilities remain excluded from a lifestyle which other people may take for granted. They want to join in and take part in the same sorts of activities, within their capabilities, as other children. They want to gain more independence from their parents as they get older, but are often prevented from doing so. We believe the provision of specialised equipment has a direct and immediate impact on a child's quality of life and independence, and is vital in helping them to overcome obstacles and achieve their potential. Equipment can include wheelchairs, walking frames, tricycles and other mobility aids, as well as communication aids, multi-sensory equipment and other information technology. |

| Services Offered: | Many people assume that a child or young person with a disability would automatically receive the equipment they need. Sadly, this is not the case.
Many families are unable to get the help they need from local health authorities for major items related to their child’s disabilities such as specialised mobility equipment. This means that because of budget constraints or delays, many families have no alternative but to purchase the items themselves, if they can afford it. This is where Children Today can help. We provide specialised equipment to improve, assist and enhance the lives of children and young people with disabilities. Specialised equipment and aids enable disabled children and young people to experience the everyday things that many of us may take for granted, often for the first time in their lives. Whether it’s a walking frame to enable them to take their first steps outside or a powered wheelchair enabling them to join their family on a walk, it can literally change their life overnight. We are also working to raise awareness of the need of these children so that in the future they get the support they need. Did you know? •There are 394,000 disabled people under the age of 16 in the UK with 100,000 of them having more than one disability. There is no statutory right for young people with disabilities to be provided with the equipment they need by the government or the NHS. •We deal directly with disabled young people or their parents or legal guardians. •We will help fund any item of equipment, however specific it may be, if it will help the child to reach their potential. •We work together with other charities, so can often co-fund when necessary. •We will help any young person, regardless of their condition or disability, up to the age of 25. •We will help a young person resident anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. •We aim to deal with all applications as quickly as possible. If you think we may be able to help please call us on 01244 335622 |
