Making Waves for Autism

Name of Organisation: Making Waves for Autism
Headline: A Charity campaigning for equal and inclusive education for children with autism
What We Do: Making Waves was set up in 2010 by two parents of children with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The purpose of the charity is to raise funds towards vital educational resources that are not provided by the local educational authority for autistic children in mainstream education, such as equipment or therapeutic services.

Services Offered: We believe that the best treatment for autism is an appropriate specialist education, supported by individualised therapeutic input and appropriate facilities. The prevailing policy is to include autistic children in mainstream education wherever possible, however this inclusion is rarely supported with adequate funding for therapeutic services and equipment. Lack of resources equals missed opportunities for early intervention, and children who are not able to reach their full potential during their time at school.

Making Waves is working towards helping children with autism to be included in mainstream education. We believe we can best do this by putting more resources into schools, enabling teachers to do their work more effectively. A child that is adequately supported by professionals during his first years in education has a better chance of maximising his potential, and growing into a happier, more confident young adult.

We aim to:

  • supporting the education of children with autism by providing additional educational resources for schools, teachers and classrooms

  • contributing to the successful inclusion of children with autism in mainstream education

  • funding vital therapeutic services and educational facilities not normally provided by local educational authorities

  • raising awareness of autism in particular in schools, and increasing the understanding of autistic spectrum disorders and how it affects a child's education

  • providing information and advice to parents, teachers and agencies
