| What We Do: | Sure Start brings together childcare, early education, health and family-support services for families with children under 5 years old.
Sure Start brings together service providers like health, social services and early education, as well as voluntary, private and community organisations and parents themselves, to provide joined-up services for young children and their families based on what local children need and parents want. Southampton city currently has 14 Sure Start Children's Centres. You will find them listed below. Each Sure Start Centre is listed separately under our Organisations listings. This is because we feel, as parents of disabled children, that we need to be confident and that SureStart can offer information/help/advice for our particular needs. Some centres offer different or extra services. The A-buzz Forum now has a rep on a Council group on Parenting, as well as others like Early Support which have an input into these centres and other services for families. We have also attended a training day for the West side of the city for staff working with families to brief them on what families who have children with special needs would like to see. We want inclusion to be 'real' and not just written in policies or bits of paper. MENCAP has also been working with the Early Years group to see how they can accommodate young children with learning difficulities and disabilities. |

| Services Offered: | You can get professional advice on:
•health and family matters •local childcare options •access to specialist services for families •training and job opportunities or you can just socialise with other people. Will I have to pay? Sure Start children's centres are open to all children and parents and many of the services are free, for example access to midwives and health visitors. You will have to pay for childcare services but there is support through tax credits for those who are eligible for help. You may also have to pay a small charge for some activities like toddler groups and baby massage. |
