The Autism Directory

Name of Organisation: The Autism Directory
Headline: helping autism families get the help they need
What We Do: The Autism Directory is run by parents with autistic children. When we were given the diagnosis we were completely unaware about autism. We knew very little about it, what caused it or what we could do to help our children. We felt isolated and alone.

We expected a learning curve, but did not anticipate one so steep.

We expected some help, but did not anticipate how little is actually given and how much you have to find out for yourself.

We expected a society that understood, but did not anticipate the lack of awareness, often ignorance, that we would have to put up with every day.

Services Offered: The Autism Directory was created because parents should not feel that they are alone. There is help and support out there, but if people don't know what or where it is how to access it then it is of no benefit to them. There are also Government and Assembly plans to help, but if families are not aware of them they will continue to feel isolated and uncared for.

There are many parent groups, online resources, charities and much more than can help us on an individual level to give practical help and advice for our family situation and needs. We just need to know it's there and how to get it.

The Autism Directory aims to pull together all that is out there and signpost autism families to the help they need. It does not intend to duplicate anything but just to pull it all together in one easy to use website that can be returned to again and again to get information, support and help.
